What «госаптека» means
Our shop window says «Государственная аптека», Russian for “state pharmacy”. Many tourists call it «госаптека» for short.
The words refer to prices, not ownership. They do not mean that the pharmacy belongs to the state. They mean that we sell registered medicines at the official, state-set price.
How official medicine prices work in Egypt
In Egypt, the government controls medicine prices. A pricing committee at the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA) sets the price of each registered medicine. It does this when the medicine is registered, and it compares prices in a group of reference countries.
The approved price must appear on the outer pack. The active ingredients are printed under the trade name, and the label is in Arabic and English.
Pharmacies may not display or sell a registered medicine at a price different from the approved one. Any exception, such as a discount, needs the EDA’s approval. The EDA also fixes the margins of pharmacies and distributors.
In September 2026, the EDA introduced a new pricing framework, Decree No. 480 of 2026. Price reviews now follow a formula based on exchange rates, inflation and interest rates. An official price can therefore change over time, but the EDA sets it, not the pharmacy.
These rules are for registered medicines. For cosmetics, oils, vitamins and personal care, our six promises above apply. Ask us about our special offers.
How to check that a price is fair
Travel advice for Egypt warns visitors about overcharging. The UK government says that some hotel doctors have overcharged for treatment and medicines. It adds that pharmacies outside hotels often supply medication at lower prices.
Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs also notes that tourists in resorts report being overcharged.
A few simple checks help:
- Read the box. A registered medicine shows its approved price on the outer pack.
- Compare the active ingredient, not the brand. One ingredient can come in several brands, each with its own official price.
- Check the strength and pack size. A bigger pack costs more, and you may not need it.
- Ask for the total before you pay. This avoids surprises at the counter.
- Send us a photo. Use our price check on WhatsApp, and we will tell you our price.

FAQ
Questions people ask
Do tourists pay more for medicines at Apteka Sharm?
No. Registered medicines are sold at the official prices set in Egypt, with no tourist mark-up. The approved price is printed on the outer pack, so you can check it yourself. For cosmetics, oils, vitamins and personal care, ask about our special offers for tourists on selected products.
Who sets medicine prices in Egypt?
A pricing committee at the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA) sets the price of each registered medicine. Since September 2026, price reviews follow a formula based on exchange rates, inflation and interest rates. Pharmacies may not sell a registered medicine at a different price unless the EDA approves, for example a discount.
Why does your window say «Государственная аптека»?
«Государственная аптека» means “state pharmacy” in Russian, and tourists often shorten it to «госаптека». For us, it refers to state-set prices, not state ownership. Registered medicines are sold at the official prices set in Egypt, which is the price printed on the pack.
Do you have special offers for tourists?
