Apteka Sharm stocks baby and children’s care products for families on holiday in Sharm El Sheikh. Examples include Otrivin Baby saline nose drops, Johnson’s baby shampoo, and Tiny Brainies gummies. Our pharmacists speak English, Russian, Ukrainian and Italian.

Sun protection for babies and children

Keep babies under 6 months out of direct sunlight. Sunscreen is not recommended for them, so use shade, light clothing and a sunshade on the pushchair. Do not cover the pushchair with a blanket, because your baby could overheat.

From 6 months, use a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher that protects against UVA and UVB. Reapply it every 2 hours and straight after swimming. Ask us which children’s sunscreens are in stock today.

Saline drops for blocked noses

Saline (salt-water) nose drops can help loosen dried mucus and ease a stuffy nose. We stock Otrivin Baby saline drops, which contain sodium chloride (salt). Follow the leaflet.

Children under 6 should not have cough and cold remedies, including decongestants, unless a doctor or pharmacist advises it. The Otrivin brand also sells medicated nose products, so check that the box says “Baby Saline”.

Gentle shampoo

For newborns, the NHS advises washing the hair with plain water. Johnson’s baby shampoo is made for a baby’s delicate hair and scalp. Its label says it is as gentle to the eyes as pure water.

Nappy-area care

Change wet or dirty nappies quickly, and keep the skin clean and dry. Clean it with water or fragrance-free, alcohol-free baby wipes. Do not use soap, bubble bath or talcum powder on the nappy area.

A pharmacist can suggest a barrier cream to protect the skin at each change. Ask us which nappy creams and wipes are in stock today. See a doctor if nappy rash gets worse or does not go away.

Children’s vitamins

Most healthy children who eat a variety of foods do not need a multivitamin. If you choose one, pick one made for your child’s age, and do not combine two supplements. Read more about vitamins and supplements.

Gummies such as Tiny Brainies look and taste like sweets. Keep them out of children’s reach and sight.

What to pack for children

  • Sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, a sun hat and sunglasses
  • Children’s pain, fever and allergy medicine, with a syringe or cup to measure it
  • A digital thermometer and plasters
  • Oral rehydration salts
  • Saline nose drops

Never give adult medicines to children

Children need medicines made for their age, in the right strength. Never give a child medicine bought for an adult or for someone else. Do not give aspirin to children under 16 unless a doctor prescribes it.

Measure liquid medicine with the oral syringe that comes with it, not a kitchen spoon. Ask a pharmacist or doctor before you give any medicine. Tell them your child’s age and weight, and follow the leaflet.

When a sick child needs a doctor

A child’s high temperature usually goes down within 1 to 4 days. Read our guide to fever in children.

See a doctor urgently if:

  • a baby under 3 months has a temperature of 38C or higher (39C or higher at 3 to 6 months)
  • your child is drowsy and hard to wake, or not responding as usual
  • your child has difficulty breathing or breathes very fast
  • your child has a fit (seizure)
  • a rash does not fade when you press a glass against it
  • your child has a stiff neck or is bothered by light
  • your child seems dehydrated, with dry nappies, sunken eyes or no tears

In an emergency in Egypt, call 123 for an ambulance.
