What food supplements are

A food supplement is a product you take by mouth to add to your diet. It can be a tablet, capsule, gummy or liquid with vitamins, minerals or plant extracts.

Supplements are not medicines and are not meant to treat illness. The research behind them varies widely, and “natural” does not always mean safe.

The NHS says most people get the nutrients they need from a varied, balanced diet. Some people may need supplements.

Vitamin basics

Vitamin C

Vitamin C helps protect cells and keeps skin, blood vessels, bones and cartilage healthy. Most people get enough from fruit and vegetables.

Very large amounts can cause stomach pain and diarrhoea.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D helps the body control calcium and phosphate, which keep bones, teeth and muscles healthy. Your skin makes vitamin D in direct sunlight. Sunlight cannot give you too much, but it can burn, so use sun protection.

Davalindi is a high-strength vitamin D3 tablet. Take it only as a doctor or our pharmacist advises. Too much vitamin D over a long time can build up calcium in the body. This can weaken the bones and damage the kidneys and heart.

Omega-3

Omega-3s are fats found in oily fish, such as salmon and mackerel, and in fish oil supplements. Side effects are usually mild, such as an unpleasant taste or heartburn.

Some fish oil products also contain vitamin A or D, which can be harmful in large amounts. Limitless Omega-3, for example, contains vitamin D3. Read every label, so you do not take the same vitamin twice.

Multivitamin gummies

A multivitamin combines many vitamins and minerals. The US health agency NCCIH says taking one is unlikely to cause health problems.

Medicines, pregnancy and health conditions

Supplements may interact with medicines. They can also be unsafe with some health conditions or before surgery. If you take medicines or have a long-term condition, ask a doctor or pharmacist first.

Many supplements have not been tested in pregnancy, breastfeeding or children. If you are pregnant, ask a doctor or pharmacist first. Check labels for vitamin A (retinol), which the NHS advises against in pregnancy.

Follow the label. If you notice side effects, stop the supplement and talk to a doctor or pharmacist.

Children and vitamin gummies

Gummy vitamins look and taste like sweets, and young children cannot always tell the difference. Keep all gummies out of children’s reach and sight, including adult ones. Tell children that vitamins are not sweets.

Ask a pharmacist which product suits your child’s age, and do not give two supplements at the same time. See our baby and children’s care products.

Travelling with vitamins

  • Keep vitamins in their original, labelled packs. Pill boxes and bags often lack child-resistant caps.
  • Keep them away from heat, such as a hot car. Heat can make many medicines work less well.
  • In your hotel room, use the safe or a high shelf.
  • Each country has its own rules on medicines. Read our guide to taking medicines home from Egypt.

See a doctor urgently if: a child may have swallowed vitamins or supplements that were not meant for them. Get help at once, even if you are not sure. In an emergency in Egypt, call 123 for an ambulance.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Can I buy vitamins at a pharmacy in Sharm El Sheikh?

Yes. Apteka Sharm has 5 pharmacies across Sharm El Sheikh. Examples on our shelves include C-Retard (vitamin C), Davalindi (vitamin D3), Limitless gummies and omega-3, and gummies for children. Stock changes, so send us the product name or a photo on WhatsApp first. Hotel delivery is free on orders from $30.

Are food supplements the same as medicines?

No. Food supplements, such as vitamin gummies or fish oil capsules, are made to add to your diet. They are not medicines and are not meant to treat illness. Some can still interact with medicines, and many have not been tested in pregnancy, so tell our pharmacist what else you take before you buy.

Can I take vitamins when I am pregnant?

Ask a doctor or pharmacist first. Many supplements have not been tested in pregnancy. The NHS advises pregnant women not to take cod liver oil or supplements containing vitamin A (retinol), because too much vitamin A could harm the baby. Check every label, and tell our pharmacist that you are pregnant.

How should I carry vitamins when I travel?

Keep vitamins and supplements in their original, labelled packs, because pill boxes and bags often lack child-resistant caps. Keep them away from heat, such as a hot car. In your hotel room, store them in the safe or on a high shelf, out of children's reach. Each country has its own rules on medicines, so check before you fly.
